Men and women are different. It seems an obvious statement. From the genetic level, to anatomy, to physiology, down to biochemistry. Yet historically there has been a gap in the medical literature and the results from studies conducted on males (an easier group to study due to absence of hormonal fluctuations from the menstrual cycle) have been assumed to be applicable to females.
However, there is now a growing body of evidence highlighting the differences between sexes when it comes to optimising performance, training, and injury prevention.
The different stages of the menstrual cycle, as well as cycle dysfunction (endometriosis, PCOS, or irregularities due to inadequate fuel intake compared to energy expenditure (RED-S)) can contribute to many conditions that you may not necessarily think of as having a hormonal cause.
At Physical Edge Healthcare our physiotherapists are up to date with the latest research particularly with regard to the effects of the menstrual cycle or menopause on our female clients.
So for all of the ladies out thereā¦ if you suffer from recurrent headaches, migranes, back or pelvic pain, stress fractures, or reduced energy levels, or are wanting to optimise your performance in your sport or training regime, book in to see one of our physios to learn how to better work WITH your body, not against it.
