Surfing is like golf. It can be ultimately frustrating some days and amazing other days. It is an activity that you can always improve whatever stage you are in your surfing capacity.
The take off when surfing is one of the most important elements to master. Popping up quickly means you can off on steeper waves and have confidence on late take offs. A slow or poor pop-up is often due to both a combination of strength and flexibility and can often lead to falling off and blowing more waves than getting good ones.
Having strong core muscles and good flexibility in your hips and lower back defintely makes it easier to get your knees under your chest when taking off. Without getting into great depth of the biomechanics of the take off, I will delve into some simple exercises to work on to build your core.
Try these quick exercises that will both improve your core, body strength and hip flexibility. Start with a small number of repetitions and gradually build reps and sets as tolerated.
